I am pretty convinced that I am the only one who thinks of the events of the bible as if they were in one of the Lord of the Rings movies! When I read the accounts of the bible my mind tends to think they play out like a scene from those movies. Ha-ha! Okay, well that was free and probably not relevant to what I want to share with you today! :) According to our Bible in 365, the story we read about in 2 Kings 20-21 had to do with a prophecy concerning victory over Syria. This prophesy was to be fulfilled and a dead nation was about to be brought back to life.
2 Kings 20-21 (The MSG) Then Elisha died and they buried him. Some time later, raiding bands of Moabites, as they often did, invaded the country. One day, some men were burying a man and spotted the raiders. They threw the man into Elisha’s tomb and got away. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came alive, stood up, and walked out on his own two feet.
As I read this passage I tried to picture what it would be like if I was experiencing this event? I mean, could you imagine!? Picture this with me. Let’s say you are a part of the group burying this man, a band of Moabite raiders comes by, you panic, and you throw the man into this tomb (which in your panic, did not realize was Elisha’s tomb!), you don’t grab no shoes or nothing and you run for your life!
A little while later you see the man you were trying to bury walking around the streets as if he was never dead! Wow! I would have said something like: “Shut the front door! We threw you in a tomb! How are you walking around? Ain’t nobody got time fo' dat!”
We are never really told of what happens to the walking dead…or, the walking alive, but what really stuck out to me is the whole concept of a dead man being brought back to life.
You see, we serve a God who revives, renews, and restores! (Isaiah 61) We serve a God who is completely in the business of breathing life into a dead nation! We worship a King who conquered even death! Our God is the God that raises a dead man’s life! In fact, He has already done that for you and for me! Our sentence was death; our life was leading us head-on into a long-term relationship with death! Ah! Then Jesus enters the scene and brings everlasting life to our life! That is phenomenal right?
Where Jesus is, there will be life! You may think you are defeated. You may think the dream will not come to pass. You may feel like there is no plan, no hope, no purpose, no life! Then suddenly, in the midst of the chaos, when you thought it was over; life is breathed into what once was dead! It is not over ‘til God says it is!
I am so in love with God and the character and goodness that flows from every aspect of who He is! Time and time again in our readings we see that God continues to be faithful even when humankind is not. God continues to gives Israel victory with their enemies, including giving them victory of the Syrians.
2 Kings 13:22-24 (The MSG) Hazael king of Aram badgered and bedeviled Israel all through the reign of Jehoahaz. But God was gracious and showed mercy to them. He stuck with them out of respect for his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He never gave up on them, never even considered discarding them, even to this day.
God will never give up on you. He will never stop believing in you. He will always keep His covenants. He is faithful to the end. He is the One who breathes life into dry bones. Our God is the one who revives what was once dead! He is the one who brings color to our colorless lives!
I believe, that for such a time as this, God is reviving the dreams, visions, and longings that we once thought were dead and could never live. Watch and be amazed as He breathes life into the things that once seemed hopeless! He will do it and He will do it to the measure of Ephesians 3:20-21!
