Alright, let’s skip to the chase...I DESPERATELY NEED TO KNOW CHRIST MORE. I don’t want to just “know of Him”, I need to “KNOW HIM”. I need His closeness, His truth, His voice... 1Samuel 3:1 “The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli, in those days the word of the Lord was rare: there were not many visions.
1Samuel 3:7 “Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
In this third chapter of Samuel we read about two people. The first is Eli. Eli had known the Lord, he had heard His voice, he had seen and heard the Lord do things in the past but his physical and spiritual state was blinded, deafened and numb to the presence, voice and Spirit of God. He could only tell stories of what God had done, not revelations of what He was doing or was going to do. Eli became a storyteller.
Then there was Samuel. If I could sum up Samuel's call in three words it would be “Here I am”. (Which happened to be just about the only thing he repeatedly says in chapter 3) It’s what I wan’t to say to the Lord, it’s the type of attitude and spirit I want to have toward's the Lord. To just be willing. Willing to go. Willing to speak. Willing to be moldable and teachable. Faithfulness and obedience were Samuel’s greatest attributes. His life points to the perfect priest, Jesus. At this point in Samuel’s life he did not know the Lord. He had not heard His voice, nor had God’s word been revealed to him, yet he was ministering before the Lord. When I heard this my spirit shook. WHAT?????
He ministered before the Lord, yet he did not know the Lord.
This is a scary place to be as a “pastor” and as a “christian” yet we are not called to a job title or a label, we are called to KNOW HIM and make Him known. You can not do the latter without the former. For how can someone describe the taste of an orange if they never tried it? In the same way you can not make Him known if you don’t know Him.
Many Christians know what Jesus did, why He came and what He has spoken in the past but few desire to know what He is doing today, what He wants to do in them right now and what He is currently speaking. I DON’T WANT TO BE A STORYTELLER. I don't want to be Mother Goose. Although God is the same yesterday, today and forever, He is doing a new thing! Revealing more of Himself. Unveiling His plans and desires to those that would seek Him. He is giving new vision. It’s not a vision or inspiration that can come by man’s wisdom or intellect. When it comes from Him it lasts. The grass withers and the flowers fall but the word of the Lord stands firm forever!
The truth is a lot of us have this church thing down. For many it’s become an art. We’ve perfected the “church experience”. We’ve become “professional” Christians. We learned how to act. We’ve learned what to do and and what not to do. We’ve become so professional that we’ve learned how to live our lives and run these “churches” without His Spirit. Oh, it is possible and it is a scary place to be. A church without the Spirit of God is a social club. People getting together just for the purpose of fellowship. Yes, fellowship is important to the church but the apostles and disciples would of ended the whole thing if the Spirit hadn’t of came. There would be no need to keep meeting. Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Spirit came on them. They were instructed to do nothing...until His spirit came. If the Spirit didn’t come Peter and the others would of never been able to leave the upper room because fear had so gripped them. The Spirit is a prerequisite to the church. It can’t happen, the way it’s supposed to, without Him. His Spirit had to come and He came in power! Many people are desiring a production, a show, a religious experience but in the end it’s empty and powerless. Church driven by man will always produce man-made results. The truth is, if I can’t know Christ, hear His voice or experience His closeness everyday, then I quit. It’s not worth pursuing, it’s not worth showing up on a Sunday if it’s all just for fellowship. I can find that at Starbucks and many people find the same thing at a bar or a club.
ITS ALL ABOUT KNOWING JESUS. Our goal is not to get people to say a prayer, the goal is that they would KNOW HIM and His saving power. We have more faith in our programs then in His presence. We desire to follow 10 steps to freedom that man has made instead of seeking the one who has made man. We love our formulas but all we need is the Jesus. He’s the only way, the only truth and only life. He’s the only thing that will save your marriage. He’s the only hope for your addiction. He’s the only answer for you.
Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”
Lord today we ask that you would reveal your truth, your presence and spirit to your people. We don’t want to just know of You, we want to know you. Remove our blindness, heal our deafness, awaken us from our slumber. Give us a new heart and a willing spirit like Samuel. We say “Here am I” lead us by your Spirit today, In Your Holy name, Amen!
