No More Ambushes

Daily Bible CoverAs you read through your passage for today, you’ll see something that ties in with Sunday’s message.  Yesterday we were reminded what God had to say to His people when it comes to their words, the things they say, the things they write, and even what they are willing to put on Facebook.  We observed yesterday that all of the cautions and admonitions and commands in the Bible regarding how we use our tongue, our words, apply to our use of social media.  With all the wonderful things that can be done through social media, the same instruction given to all of our other communication applies to how we use what can be a wonderful way of reaching out to others. In Psalm 63 we see God speaking about the actions of people He describes as wicked and evildoers.

            Psalm 64:2-4    (NIV)

Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers. They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows. They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear.

When God speaks about being ambushed by people who are shooting their deadly arrows (words) without fear, I can’t help but picture people sitting at their computer and without any trepidation posting things that they would likely never say in person.  But without fear they shoot their arrows from a place of ambush.

In another Psalm David talks about those who attack innocent people from a place of safety

            Psalm 11:2    (NIV)

For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.Cross references:

In this passage we see people who are willing to cut and wound people as they shoot their words from the shadows.  It seems kind of cowardly doesn’t it?  It certainly isn’t godly.

Whatever method of speech you are employing at the moment, talking, writing, texting, facebooking, let’s get away from the ambushes.  Let’s bring our communication out of the shadows.  Let’s decide to confine our speech of every kind to conform to the template God has given us in the book of Ephesians.

            Ephesians 4:29    (NIV)

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

When our words pass the Ephesians 4:29 test we don’t need to ambush people and we certainly don’t need to operate from the shadows.  Not only that, we can join David in His prayer to the Lord Cross references:

            Psalm 19:14    (NIV)

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I’ll see you on Facebook.
