Yesterday in our service, we talked about the purpose of laws in our lives. Laws bring order out of chaos. They also protect the people who are under those laws. Anybody who gets into the law-making business definitely needs to keep this in mind.
There’s another thing about laws that is so apparent in our reading today. They define a style of living or put another way create a specific lifestyle. We see in the Scripture that God was not interested in having His chosen people blend into the civilization around them. He wanted them to be a Holy people. He wanted them to live as a set apart people. The laws that He was giving them would set them apart from any other nation on earth. They would be a distinct people. They wouldn’t look like people around them. They wouldn’t eat like people around them. They would not respond to life situations like the people around them. They would make decisions differently than those around them. They would stand out from the other cultures of the world. They would be different. That’s the way God wanted them to be.
It’s a fact that rules and regulations besides bringing order to chaotic situations and bringing protection, can also bring out the worst in people. Instead of realizing that those guidelines and laws are going to keep them out of bondage and give them incredible freedom, they find themselves chafing under the laws and resenting being expected to follow them.
Those laws were God’s ways of helping a chosen people to look, act, and worship differently than any other people groups in the world. His instructions were what was going to help His people look and act like Him, their Heavenly Father. And for you and me today, those things that were laws once written on tablets are what He is desiring to write on our minds and hearts. He wants us to resist fitting in with everything around us. I love the way Paul puts it:
Romans 12:2 (PHILLIPS)
Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.
As you continue to read about more of the laws given by God to help His chosen people look like Him and stand out from anybody else, make sure what He has written on your hearts and minds is causing you to look like Jesus and stand out in the crowd as one of His.
