Have you ever laughed so hard that tears run down your face, your nose runs, your face gets red, and you can't stop laughing? Have you ever had someone that made you laugh just to look at, or the same things struck you funny and everyone around you was going, "What?" It is so much fun when this happens to the point where you are weak from laughter, but you feel such a release in your whole body from the outburst. This is how I felt in reading Psalm 126. "Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy!"
My commentary talks about this Psalm coming out of the time of the restoration of Jerusalem. The mood is one of sweet joy following the sorrows of long separation. The return from Babylonian captivity had been anticipated for so long it seemed like a dream to the returnees.
Some of the people had waited an entire lifetime. The joy of the people could not be contained, their praise to God was unstoppable. It was joy and laughter, of rejoicing in God's salvation
"Bring back" is the beginning of the prayer that God would complete the restoration of His people to their land. Ultimately, this is a prayer for the coming of Jesus who will complete God's work among His people.
I couldn't help thinking about the time after I met Alan when he was gone for nearly a year. All we had were phone calls and lots of letters. The unstoppable joy when Alan finally came back was overwhelming.
Another time when Alan and our family moved away from all that was familiar to the Seattle area. When we came home we felt like kissing the ground in Idaho. The kids were so happy and we were once again back with friends and loved ones. The celebration and joy were wonderful.
So many of you have come back to Christ and been restored into the family of God, and the joy is unspeakable and full of Glory. What a glorious thing to be a part of the Kingdom that will never end.
You will now be able to watch the wonderful testimonies of restoration of people on our You-Tube Channel through Central Assembly. It is such an encouragement of our faith that seeing what Christ has done in other lives will bless us all over again. Rick Morreale will be the first You-Tube testimony from the OOPS T.V. program!
As Nate preached this last Sunday, God is in the restoration business.
