Today we see the work on the wall continues and its completion doesn't come as easy as hoped. The people are faced with threats which bring fear and discouragement. Sanballat and Tobiah speak defiantly against God's people and work. Their "song" is similar to the tune Goliath sang in the days of David, when he defied the armies of the Living God. "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble- burned as they are?" Nehemiah. 4:2
There were two responses to these threats. One response, which was done by the majority, was to step into the prison of fear which puts an end to any growth, any progress and any chance of completing the work that had been started. Sounds fun haha jk. The other response, which was only done by Nehemiah, was to step into the hand of God through the doorway of prayer and intercession. Nehemiah's response was one of complete dependence and faith in God. He knew the work and the people would fail if the Lord wasn't with them. When faced with opposition their strategy was found in Nehemiah 4:9, 13 & 16: "But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat." "Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows." "From that day on half of my men did the work, the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor."
It's interesting to me how much this relates to the work of the Lord in our lives. The enemy will do anything he can to discourage the work of God in you and I. Firing off arrows of doubt that you will ever truly become what the Lord has called you to be. That you will never be free, that you will never be fully forgiven or healed... Our enemy loves to come into our "lowest points of the wall" and our places that are the most vulnerable. It's where he loves to hang out and sing his songs of fear, defeat and discouragement. If he can plant a seed of doubt in our hearts, it will produce tremendous fruits of fear in our lives which will become in us a harvest of destruction. WE MUST PUT A GUARD OVER OUR WEAK SPOTS.
Weak spots can be insecurity, pride, greed, jealously, comparison, lust and all sorts of addictions. They can be areas in our lives we thought we had control of but in one moment of anxiety or fear the enemy will make his way through that gap to hinder and destroy the work that God has been doing in our lives. BUT the Spirit of God that dwells inside us is not powerless! No weapon formed against us will prosper! Our God is our defender and fights on our behalf! Though the enemy comes like a flood, He will raise a standard! Get on your knees and let Him prevail in POWER!
We must be careful that we are listening more to The Voice on the waves instead of the voices in the boat (Matt 14:22-33). We must be careful who we allow to speak into our lives, taking every thought captive and making them bow down to Christ and His will. Jesus is who He says He is and will do in us what He says He will do. He's either all He says He is or nothing at all. Write down the word of the Lord and let it take root in your heart so that when the enemy comes, he will not be able to shake you from what you've become convinced of!
Lord would you silence the song of the enemy in our lives and would your plans take root in us. Would you defend your cause in your people. We need You Lord, You are our God! Would you arise and let your enemies be shattered! Amen
