I was reminded of a children's church song this week as I was reading. It was one that pointed to our God's immense power and strength. It was also one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. The song went like this (with the all caps words strongly emphasized while singing for effect; imagine a room full of elementary kids shouting them at the top of their lungs.) My God is so BIG, so STRONG and so MIGHTY There's nothing my God cannot do My God is so BIG, so STRONG and so MIGHTY There's nothing my God cannot do The mountains are his The rivers are his The skies are his handiwork too My God is so BIG, so STRONG and so MIGHTY There's nothing my God cannot do There's nothing my God cannot do There's nothing my God cannot do For you
It is truly unthinkable that the God who created the universe and all that is in it could want to know me and know you on a personal level. Isaiah 40 should cause us to want to break out into praise and worship because the God who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and marked out the heavens with the breadth of his hand loves us and desires to have that kind of relationship. The God who held the dust of the earth in a basket and weighed the mountains and hills on scales stopped at nothing to restore relationship with us through his Son Jesus Christ's death on the cross.
Chapter 40 goes on to ask a list of rhetorical questions such as: "Who has understood the mind of the Lord" or "Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him and teach him the right way?" or "Who was it that taught him knowledge and understanding?" The obvious answer is NO ONE DOES OR DID.
God is Sovereign, almighty, all knowing, righteous, just, holy, infinite and in whom all truth lies. As Christians we often will nod our heads in agreement with any statement that resembles this one but by our actions deny that we believe it at all. There truly is no 0ne like our God. He created us and had a plan for us even before the foundations of the world and yet we often choose to listen instead to conventional wisdom instead of his infinite wisdom.
We find ourselves facing some difficult situation, wether of our own making or not, and all too often look at God and make a judgement call that we should probably handle this one on our own. We have forgotten the children's song and have substituted the words "so big", "so strong", and "so mighty" with "ok" , "a nice guy" and " helps when he can"
"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." Hebrews 11:1-3.
I believe the day is now for us to see our faith arise and be strengthened in such a way that we would never think of turning back on a God who is BIG, STRONG, and MIGHTY.
Just this last Sunday we had an amazing prayer time down at the altar during our morning service. We invited people who had needs to come forward and we spent some tine going before the Lord; in faith. Phenomenal things happened. I hope that i hear of more miraculous testimonies as the days and weeks go by but there is one that I would like to share with you as I close.
My wife injured her foot by tearing some ligaments on July 2nd while doing some running. It was excruciatingly painful and she couldn't put any weight on it at all for several days. In fact she crawled around the house most of the first day. On the 4th of July, we went to a movie with many of my wife's family and she was able to walk with crutches as long as she kept her foot off the ground. A couple of days later she was, with the help of supports in her shoes, able to heavily limp around, but she was still trying to keep off of it as much as she could since this kind of injury can be one that takes as long as several months to heal.
Well, that brings us to Sunday morning. She did not go forward when the call was made for herself but instead went to pray for her aunt (pastor Sharon) who was having open heart surgery this week. During that beautiful prayer time she felt that God was asking her if her foot injury was too small of a thing for him, and being reminded of the verse "you have not because you ask not", she prayed.
When that time was over, I found her and as we made our way back to our seats, she told me that her foot was now completely pain free and completely healed. She has not limped or felt even a twinge of pain since that moment last Sunday Morning.
OUR GOD IS SO BIG SO STRONG AND SO MIGHTY THERE'S NOTHING MY GOD CANNOT DO!
Whew, I'll tell you what there is nothing like seeing God work miracles in the lives of his people. The God we have been reading about now for the last 6 months in this Biblein365 journey is not a God who shows up if he doesn't have better things going on. HE is a God who is there and a God who is faithful.
Take a moment to think back on your life this weekend and remind yourself of all the ways that God has provided for you or for you family over the years. Maybe if you are having a hard time coming up with some examples, spend some time in prayer and ask God to open the eyes of your heart to what he has been doing in your life all along even though you may have not seen him moving. Ask him reveal the ways he has protected, healed, provided, directed, spoken or just simply loved you.
Then take some time to just worship Him. Because there truly is NOTHING that our God cannot do! For you.
